Cytoplan, the UK’s leading food-based supplement provider believes that many children suffer from ‘hidden hunger’. This means that they do not get enough nutrients from their diet alone, leaving them more prone to illness. With mineral levels in the soil increasingly depleted and many diets are not as varied as they should be, not to mention all the fussy-eaters, many children are found to be deficient in nutrients.
Cytoplan’s belief that children [and indeed the rest of the population] are deficient in key nutrients such as iron is backed up by research from leading health experts in the field. According to the British Medical Journal, ‘In inner cities in the UK, iron deficiency anemia (IDA) occurs in infants with the same frequency as in developing countries’. Making sure children get enough iron is very important, as iron plays a key role in good muscle and brain function, since it is needed to make hemoglobin, the oxygen-carrying component of red blood cells. Without sufficient iron in the diet, the body makes fewer red blood cells, which in turn can result in fatigue, dizziness, a loss of appetite and increased irritability. The British Medical Journal asserts that ‘evidence is now accumulating to show that IDA is associated with developmental delay’ which could lead to behavioural or learning difficulties.
Iron is not the only essential vitamin that is deficient in children in the UK. According to the Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital, many children are also deficient in Vitamin D, since only a ‘few natural foods such as oily fish and eggs contain significant amounts of Vitamin D’ and ‘sunshine is the main source of Vitamin D’. However, ‘Vitamin D can only be made in our skin by exposure to sunlight when the sun is high in the sky. Therefore in most of the UK from November to February, and in Scotland from October to March, Vitamin D cannot be made from sunshine.’ Vitamin D deficiency can cause numerous problems in children, including an increased chance of rickets, weak bones, poor growth and muscle weakness.
To bridge this nutritional gap and combat the problem of iron and Vitamin D deficiency, as well as other vitamin and mineral deficiencies in children, Cytoplan have created two kid’s nutrition supplements specially intended to meet children’s daily nutritional needs at optimum levels. These two multivitamins are designed to be taken together, to provide the most comprehensive range of nutrients and vitamins and ensure optimum levels for children.
The Kids’ Immunovite mini capsule capsule [to be swallowed, not chewed, as iron when chewed can cause tooth discolouration in some children] contains Vitamin C, Iron, Zinc and Selenium, all of which contribute to the normal functioning of the immune system and the protection of cells from oxidative stress.
Nutri Bears, is a chewable multivitamin comprising vitamin and mineral enriched jelly bears. The Nutri Bears contain a full spectrum of nutrients in the amounts that children need, including Vitamins C, D and E as well as B vitamins [Vitamin B6, Folic Acid and Vitamin B12].
Viewed very much as the ‘practitioner supplement’, Cytoplan’s has always worked closely with scientists and doctors in the development of their products; adding these multivitamins to children’s diets will ensure their bodies are given the vital support they need to work as well as they can.
